Heart Connections

"Community is a place where the connections felt in our hearts make themselves known in the bonds between people, and where the tuggings and pullings of those bonds keep opening our hearts." ~ Parker J. Palmer
We have been trained from our early years to do things ourselves. We were told: Be independent. You can accomplish what you need. Just do it. That advice helped us to become self-sufficient and allowed us to grow and succeed in life.
While we were mastering our skills on our own, not everyone had the benefit of knowing there is community behind them. It is a great gift to know we are not alone in our struggles and that others faced similar challenges. Somehow we feel more connected to know our neighbors and friends share our fears, doubts and frustrations.
Women especially are often unaware of the emotional stress they carry, such as guilt, self-judgment, and victim thinking. Little girls were trained to obey the rules and expectations of family, the church and society. Rules were repeated constantly. Be polite. Share with everyone. It’s not nice to be angry. Little girls should be seen and not heard. Those messages are deeply embedded in the subconscious can lead women to feel isolated and misunderstood.
Creating connections with others is so important in today’s world. Find connection with enjoyable activities like sports, neighborhood organizations, and church groups. Volunteering allows us to be in service and that enhances our connection in community.
Doing our inner work is just as important. Taking time for meditation, prayer, and contemplation helps lift us out of self-doubt and those inner insecurities that keep us awake during the night.
When you find yourself struggling, reach out to a friend, family member, or minister for support. Whatever you decide to do, know that you are not alone. From the Book of Love and Creation, Paul Selig reminds us, “Once you understand that on a higher level your frequency is one with your Creator, everything seems to change.”
