What if…

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see. Henry David Thoreau
My friend shared during a phone conversation that she was anxious about an upcoming trip and was dreading the four hour plane ride. She went on to list all the problems with flying —overcrowded plane, no meal, flight cancellations, lost luggage— her anxiety was high.
I asked her if we could transform the fear ‘what-if’s’ to faith. I invited her to visualize that her experience was not going to be like it was in the past but would be an uplifting new experience. I invited her to shift away from her deepest fear to possibility —What if your body felt comfortable in the seat. What if you have wonderful seat partners that are kind and courteous. What if your plane is on time and your luggage arrives with you. What if everyone you meet is friendly and helpful. I reminded her that I would be in prayer and knowing a wonderful trip.
Our brains are trained to put attention on what we don’t want instead of what we do want. It takes conscious intention to pivot away from the worst case scenario to imagine the best. Ernest Holmes reminds us, “The more power one gives to their thought–the more completely they believe that thought has power–the more power will it have.” Our best practice is to entertain our highest thought.
My friend returned and shared about her wonderful trip. People were super friendly, her flight was on time and she had all that she needed. Even though there were some challenges getting to the airport, she stayed centered and calm. Everything worked out and she had a great trip. Prayer answered.
